Celebrating What Matters: A Holiday Reflection on Meeting Our Needs for Connection

Dec 30, 2024

It's the week of... Hanukkah, Christmas and the day I finally get to see my husband, my happy holiday. We have been living on opposite sides of the world for the past 6 months and I will spend tomorrow traveling to see him. The countdown is on!

My biggest celebration - is being in-person with those I love. What about you?

We can celebrate anything we want today.

We celebrate when our needs are being met, as well as when we are seeing progress.

I celebrate what is important to me and fills my needs: family, relationships, and connection.

I need it, now more than ever.

What do you need right now?

Taking the time to ask that question can reveal the greatest truths. (And yes, the first answer is often the most telling, especially since it's often, "I need for people to just leave me the @$&^ alone and to sleep."

What do you need?

It is NOT a selfish question. In this season of giving, so many of us have just given everything we have and find ourselves empty and depleted. When we answer the question, we can start finding the ways to gift replenishment to ourselves.

Last week, I was on a YouTube Live with Dr Makda Majette of Embracing Joy. She's an amazing Family Physician, HIV Medicine Specialist AND improv enthusiast (we're twinsies!) from Miami. We spoke about the role of joy in our lives as physicians, parents and adults navigating a go-go-go world. She asked about how as adults we can get the permission to play. My response: We give that gift to ourselves. The gift of permission.

What gift do you want to offer yourself?

Happy Holidays to all as we celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Festivus (no joking, legit celebrations), Universal Hours of Peace, Boxing Day and a brand New Year and... connecting with what is important to you.
